Tackling Water Challenges in the Mexico-US border
Binational Waters is a nonprofit, binational, and multidisciplinary institution of scientists and experts dedicated to improve water resiliency along the Mexico-US border region.
Our mission is to improve water and environmental resilience of border communities through scientific research, communication, and education.

Our focus areas at binational scale
Rivers and aquifer basins do not recognize political boundaries. The Rio Grande, the Colorado River and other transboundary water systems connect communities in both countries. The Permanent Forum of Binational Waters seeks to unite the efforts of scientists, policymakers, and citizens to address pressing water challenges. We provide services designed to build social capacity and drive sustainable solutions for decision-makers:
Applied Research for public and private organizations
Design, develop and implement research projects to address specific water challenges at local or regional scale.

Working Together for a Sustainable Future in the Border Region
Through the Permanent Forum of Binational Waters, we bring together experts from both sides of the border to address critical issues, promote cooperation and collaboration among stakeholders, and foster innovation.
We collaborate on several projects, such as the Pilot Program for Shared Aquifer Knowledge and Management (APN-Maverick Aquifer), the Annual Ranking of Companies with Best Management Practices, Water Monitoring through Citizen Science in the Tijuana River Basin, among other projects that drive positive and creative impact in the region’s water conditions.
Transboundary Aquifers Pilot Program
The Pilot Program for Shared Aquifer Knowledge and Management (APN) focuses on cross-border collaboration to study and manage shared aquifers. This project improves data sharing and decision-making for sustainable groundwater use between Mexico and the US.
California-Baja California Coastal Resilience
The One Coast, One Community Platform provides a comprehensive database for water resources in the Tijuana-San Diego region. It helps local governments and communities access critical information for water conservation and efficient management.
Monterrey Metropolitan Zone Recharge Areas Identification
The Initiative addresses water scarcity in the Monterrey region by promoting best practices in water reuse and efficient resource management, directly impacting local industries and communities.
