Building Coastal Resilience: Enhancing Water Quality and Erosion Control

The project One Coast, One Community, focuses on monitoring water quality and coastal erosion in the regions of San Diego in California, and Tijuana, and Rosarito in Baja California.

This initiative, supported by the San Diego Foundation, aims to generate accessible data through an open science movement of citizen participation, promoting collaboration and community-driven solutions.

With the growing threat of climate change and associated coastal erosion impacts, this project is vital for enhancing resilience along the coastlines of these border region.

A Four-Phase Approach for our shared coast between Mexico and the US

With the growing threat of climate change and associated coastal erosion impacts, this project is vital for enhancing resilience along the coastlines of these border region.

Phase One: Coastal Vulnerability Diagnosis

This initial phase involves collecting and analyzing historical climatic, demographic, and statistical data to identify areas of vulnerability along the coastlines of San Diego, Tijuana, and Rosarito. The goal is to understand the factors contributing to coastal erosion and water quality decline.

Phase Two: Building the Data Infrastructure

A user-friendly digital platform will be created to serve as a central hub for coastal water quality and coastal erosion beach data. The platform will allow for easy access to relevant information and serve as a resource for policymakers and the community.

Phase Three: Citizen Science and Water Quality Monitoring

A user-friendly digital platform will be created to serve as a central hub for coastal water quality and coastal erosion beach data. The platform will allow for easy access to relevant information and serve as a resource for policymakers and the community.

Phase Four: Expanding Awareness and Partnerships

The final phase aims to spread awareness of the platform through strategic communication efforts, including educational materials on sustainable coastal management and partnerships with organizations to expand the platform’s reach.

Empowering Coastal Communities Through Citizen Science

This pioneering project connects coastal communities across borders, promoting the open science movement

Through citizen participation, individuals are empowered to monitor their environment and contribute to coastal sustainability efforts.

By involving local citizens, scientists, and policymakers, this project creates a network of informed advocates for coastal resilience.
