Advances in Transboundary Aquifer Assessment

The Water journal by MDPI has announced a call for submissions to its special issue titled Advances in Transboundary Aquifer Assessment. Edited by renowned experts Dr. Sharon B. Megdal and Dr. Anne-Marie Matherne, this edition seeks to bring global attention to the importance of understanding and managing groundwater systems that span political boundaries.

As global water demand intensifies, so does the need for cooperative solutions. The editors emphasize that Transboundary Aquifer Assessment is not just a technical challenge but a diplomatic and cultural one as well. Effective management requires collaboration across jurisdictions, languages, and legal frameworks. This special issue invites original papers focused on aquifer characteristics, groundwater availability and quality, and water use in shared basins.

Submissions are especially encouraged from projects integrating hydrological modeling with socioeconomic or institutional analysis. Researchers working on cooperative mechanisms, policy development, or stakeholder engagement in the context of Transboundary Aquifer Assessment are urged to contribute.

This call comes at a critical time. As underground freshwater resources become increasingly essential to support agriculture, urbanization, and ecosystems, assessing their conditions and vulnerabilities is key. Transboundary aquifers often lack sufficient monitoring and joint management structures, making them particularly fragile in the face of climate variability and competing demands.

The editors hope this special issue will serve as a platform to consolidate recent advancements and inspire further cooperation. They are particularly interested in papers that can support practical solutions for decision-makers in both developed and developing regions.

With high visibility through indexing platforms like Scopus, Web of Science, and GEOBASE, the journal Water provides a valuable venue for scholars looking to amplify the impact of their work in Transboundary Aquifer Assessment.

Researchers are invited to submit their manuscripts by April 1, 2021. For submission guidelines and further information, visit the MDPI special issue page.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the most pressing water management challenges of our time: the effective governance of shared underground water resources through rigorous Transboundary Aquifer Assessment.
