Droughts and human induced stress in the Rio Conchos basin

June 30, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

stress in the Rio Conchos basin

The Rio Conchos is considered as one of the most strategic water stressed basins that feeds the Rio Grande Basin…and the role of humans in its current condition.

On June 30, 2022, from 4:00 to 5:15 p.m. (CT), the Permanent Forum of Binational Waters hosted a special Science Talk focused on droughts and human-induced stress in the Rio Conchos basin.

This vital basin plays a critical role in water flows to the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. However, recurring droughts, intensive water use, and climate variability are increasing stress in the Rio Conchos basin, threatening both ecosystems and communities on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border.

Speakers:

  • Marusia Rentería-Villalobos, Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua

  • Rodrigo Israel González Velázquez, UNICEF México

  • Laura Elisa Garza Díaz, UC Davis

  • Paul Hernández Romero, UNESCO-UDLAP Chair & Consultant

Moderators:

  • Gabriela Rendón Herrera, UC Davis

  • Saúl Arciniega Esparza, UNAM

The panel explored hydrometeorological risks, institutional responses, and collaborative strategies to build basin resilience and equity in water access.
