Call for Dia de los Muertos Altar for Our Rivers

dia de los muertos altar

The dia de los muertos Altar to Remember is a deeply rooted tradition in Mexico, where we honor and remember those who have passed away, celebrating their lives with altars, offerings, and family gatherings.

On this day, it is believed that the veil between the living and the dead is thinner, allowing us to reconnect with our loved ones. This year, at the Permanent Forum of Binational Waters, we want to extend this celebration to our natural environment, particularly our rivers.

Our rivers, much like our loved ones whom we remember on Day of the Dead, have been a source of life, sustenance, and culture for generations.

However, many of these rivers are in danger, deteriorating due to pollution, overuse, and climate change. That is why we are launching the Rivers to Remember campaign.

Dia de los muertos: Altar to Honor Our Rivers

Let us remember our rivers by sending a photo of a river in a state of deterioration along with its name. By participating, you will help raise awareness about the importance of preserving these water sources, which are vital for life.

How to participate?

  • Send your photo and the river’s name to [email protected] or via direct message on our social media platforms.
  • The submission period is from October 7 to November 3, 2024.
  • Selected photos will be published on our social media to highlight the water crisis and the need to conserve our rivers.

The dia de los muertos 2023, we celebrated with a call to write “calaveritas,” which are traditional Mexican literary compositions recited during the Day of the Dead celebrations. These short, often humorous and satirical poems are directed at living people, with death as the protagonist.

This was the outcome of our dia de los muertos 2023.

Now, in 2024, with this campaign, the Permanent Forum of Binational Waters aims to raise awareness and encourage action to protect our valuable water sources.

Let us not allow our rivers to be forgotten. Together, we can create a future where water continues to unite us.
