Join the December Coffee Break, where experts will discuss challenges and strategies for preserving water quality in the border region.

Join the December Coffee Break hosted by the Permanent Forum of Binational Waters (PFBW), titled “Pollution and Ecosystems: Rivers, Aquifers, and Coasts in the Mexico–United States Border Region.” This session will focus on the growing problem of pollution in waterways, a challenge that affects both water availability and ecosystem health.

Gabriela Rendón Herrera, head of strategic communication at PFBW, emphasized that in a time of diminishing water resources, pollution in waterways—including rivers, aquifers, and coastal zones—has become a critical concern that demands urgent attention.

She explained that addressing the issue requires a two-pronged approach: first, by diagnosing the scale and sources of contamination, and then applying effective mitigation and prevention strategies to safeguard water quality for future generations.

The Coffee Break will take place on Thursday, December 7, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. (U.S. Central Time) via Zoom. The event will feature guest experts who will share scientific insights and practical strategies for reducing pollution in waterways across the U.S.–Mexico border region:

  • Carmen Julia Navarro Gómez, Professor and Researcher at Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH)
  • Teresita Oropeza, Research Professor at Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana (ITT)
  • Tricia Cortez, Director, Rio Grande International Study Center
  • Carlos Barriga Vallejo, Director, Ecorregiones Tamaulipecas y Humedales at Pronatura Noreste

These speakers will examine the impacts of pollution in waterways on aquatic ecosystems and discuss long-term regional solutions. The session will be moderated by biologist Gabriela Rendón Herrera and water governance expert Erick Velázquez.

Participation is free, with English-Spanish interpretation provided.
